Gary is the retired former owner of Fort Collins Wholesale Industry and a former owner of Fort Collins Retail Nursery. For his entire life, he has been deeply entrenched in the Colorado horticulture industry. His passion for plants and his hands-on approach to identifying and developing new varieties for the market have been cornerstones of his career.
Gary is the creator of “Gus the Gnome,” a beloved figure that has become a household name in our industry. The popularity of Gus the Gnome has generated thousands of dollars over the years, funds which are dedicated to financing cutting-edge research and supporting student scholarships for the future leaders of horticulture. Moreover, Gary’s commitment to nurturing young talent and helping them make meaningful contributions to the industry has been unparalleled. Through his mentorship and guidance, he has shaped and inspired the next generation of horticulture professionals.

Throughout his tenure with CHREF, Gary served in various capacities, including president of the board. His leadership has been instrumental in advancing CHREF’s initiatives, particularly in raising awareness and fostering the development of future horticulture leaders. One of Gary’s early goals was to see the endowment reach 1 million dollars, a milestone he successfully achieved. His efforts have set a foundation for ongoing growth and innovation within the industry.
As Gary steps down from the board, we express our immense gratitude for his significant contributions.
